Favourite Character of the Week: Ezio Auditore da Firenze

Assassino! Ah yes, the grand master himself, Ezio Auditore. I think the thing about Ezio is, that we see him grow old, and even with the time skips in the game, there is a consistency. We see him go from a reckless boy to a wise old man, and it is one of the best things in the game series. In Assassin’s Creed II we play him from birth (literally), we see him as womanising teenager getting himself into trouble and we see how the death of his family turns him into an incredibly vengeful person. But the thing is, during his thirty year quest for revenge, we see how he becomes part of something bigger than himself and his own personal grievance; in Brotherhood, we see him, now middle aged, move to Rome, become leader of the Assassins and become a Robin Hood like character as he turns the city against its Borgia masters. Revelations sees him an older and wiser man, tired of killing, and looking for meaning. In Constantinople he only finds the Assassin-Templar war fought more fiercely than ever, but he also finds love and a new reason to live. His last words in the game are incredibly poignant given all he’s been through…and finally, we see him in his last days in the short film Embers…

An honourable mention should also go to his predecessor Altair ibn L’Ahad, who had a life equally as long (even longer!) and interesting, and tragic. I think Altair (whose life is featured in the book The Secret Crusade) is perhaps a bit cooler than Ezio, (he fought Genghis Khan!) but the latter is far more human, which is why he is my favourite of the Assassins so far…
